Richy

I’m a proud husband who spent years working in the pest-control industry. My wife and I now live beside a farm, where we’ve dealt with our fair share of mice and rats sneaking in from the fields each year.

Each year I test and rank the top household pest repellents I can find on the market — effectiveness, safety for pets and kids, smell, cost — and share the results here.

My Top Mouse Repellent Picks of 2026

Getting rid of rodents and pests is hard. When there’s one, there’s usually more. I tested for effectiveness, pet & child safety, and smell.

My Top Pick of 2026

This year had a pretty solid #1 as you’ll see below. I haven’t seen these in the past to test so assuming they are new this year — seriously, incredible.

★ Most Effective ★

RodentRX

4.8/5 ★★★★★

What I love:

  • Very effective for pests & rodents
  • Safe for kids & pets
  • No smell
  • Affordable
  • No Chemicals
  • One time purchase
  • Instant results
  • Prevents “nesting”
  • New this year

What could be better:

  • Often out of stock
  • Not made for outdoor use

My Research Outcome & Overview

Getting the right product that worked at a consistent rate proved to be difficult as many of the products had little to no effect. Having a child and pets at home, safety quickly become important in my rankings. To be honest, it’s extremely challenging and overwhelming in such an urgent time where you just want them gone. Most of these products take time to really see results making the testing a drawn out process.

This in-depth guide can be used to take my learnings and apply them. Yes, this is more than the average homeowner is willing to go through, but with my background, I had fun with it! I also created this comparison chart that summarizes all of my research. I update this post whenever there’s a new product to test to ensure that all of the information below is recent and accurate.

Scientifically Testing Rodent Repellents

Testing the leading mouse repellents side by side

My key components and checklist: (Quality + Effectiveness + Cost + Safety + Smell) ÷ 5.

  1. Test The Leading Mice Repellents: First, I wanted to make sure I tested all of the leading mice repellents on the market I could find. I chose the following brands: Grandpa Gus’s, RodentRX, X-Pest, Fresh Cab, Earthkind, Haycore, Everfield, Mighty Mint, Tomcat, and Bye Critter.
  2. Sample Size: My house is 2,048 sq ft and we had rodent sign in multiple areas — so there were a few “test zones” to start. The main hot spots were the kitchen and bedrooms, but the unfinished basement also had heavy sign.
  3. Factors Compared: I rated each repellent on the following: effectiveness, smell, safety, cost, and quality.
  4. Rating System: I then rated each product in each category on a simple 1–5 scale (1 = not great, 5 = amazing).
  5. Choosing A Winner: Lastly, I added up all the points for each repellent and gave them a final score to choose a winner.

Testing Environment & Layout

I also needed to test the effectiveness of each repellent to see if it actually worked for removing the mice. Finding the right test environment was the hardest part — here’s how I did it:

  1. Find the hot spots: I started in the most active areas with the products that were easiest to deploy (ultrasonic devices and tablets).
  2. Give each one time to prove itself: I gave each repellent enough time to prove results — typically a week or more, depending on early indicators. There were three main controlled test locations. Once I found the one that worked best, I spread it to the entire house at the end to confirm.
  3. Measure effectiveness by new droppings: I measured effectiveness by assessing how many new droppings appeared. (I did see a mouse run across our kitchen counter during this period, but that’s a story for another time.) Based on the size of the droppings I could tell both mice and rats were in the home — a little more intimidating if I’m being honest.

Mice Repellent Types

Why Pouches & Plug-Ins Worked The Best

One of the main things I wanted to figure out was what style of repellent worked best. Throughout the process, general themes formed depending on the style of repellent. A few things I prioritized in this research:

Every repellent I tested, photographed together

Pros of Electronic Repellents

Noticed results in the first week

It was relatively immediate — I tested these pretty heavy in the kitchen, where the most sign was. We went from fresh sign to minimal new sign within days. If I’d expanded to more outlets earlier, I think it would have gone even faster.

Safety

After researching for days, the electronic solutions were the easiest to use, and 100% child and pet friendly. There’s a little thought that needs to go into how many rooms to put them in, but nothing out of the ordinary. The pouches also claim to be pet and kid friendly, but they include cautions to keep out of reach of pets and children — which was contradictory to me.

Smell

This one is often overlooked but important. Electronic devices had no smell. I had mixed feelings on the pouch solutions — some overwhelming, some bad, and one smelling like an air freshener. I liked that the electronic device had no smell at all.

Less expensive

The cost is extremely reasonable when you think about how much some of these products run. Professional pest control quoted me over $2,100 including an ongoing fee. I focus on per-unit cost in relation to overall coverage vs. total cost, since the volume is different on each product.

The mouse stays alive

These are made to deter mice and rats (rodents) vs. kill them. That avoids any mess and the possibility of a rodent rotting in a wall. If you haven’t smelled that before, consider yourself lucky.

Cons of Electronic Repellents

Out of stock issues

During peak seasons I’ve struggled to get my hands on more for friends, family, and clients. What I’ve found to work best is to stock up when they’re available. I’m sure this will improve over time, but something to watch out for.

Outside usage

While these work great indoors and in garages and sheds, they don’t hold up long in exposed outdoor elements (rain, wind, sun, etc.).

Replacement

They’re well made — all of mine are still working, including the one in my toolshed exposed to hot summers and cold winters — but it may add a small cost if any ever need replacing.

RodentRX vs. the other repellents tested

The best mouse repellent I tried: RodentRX

★ Most Effective ★
1
RodentRX
★★★★☆ 4.8/5
RodentRX Ultrasonic Repeller

Overall Rating — My ABSOLUTE favorite this year. The RodentRX ultrasonic repeller checked all of the boxes, making it a pretty easy #1 choice. To my knowledge, it’s new this year. It completely cleared the area in the test phase, and when I moved it to the entire house, it stopped the sign and sounds — pointing at the mice moving out, which was my main goal. It was also the safest and easiest to use.

❤️ What I love — A lot of the repellents I tried seem to have little to no effect. I remember some of the pouches having mouse sign literally right next to them a day after setting them down. Not the case here. There were no droppings anywhere near the device, and the safety for my pets and family was key.

RodentRX plugged in during the test
RodentRX plugged in — zero new sign after the first week.

🙈 What could be better — I’ve been using these for a while now, and coming up on peak season of 2026, this sounds minor but is annoying: they run out of stock. Originally I only ordered 3 to test them out, and when I returned to purchase more, they were temporarily out of stock. Something to keep an eye on — they seem to have problems keeping up with demand. The other thing is outdoor usage. Their website states these are rated for indoor use only. I’ve actually had good luck running them outside, so they do seem to work out there — but they’re not built to be waterproof or stand up to the elements, so don’t be surprised if one fails on you eventually if you put it outdoors.

Test Area: Bedroom.

📄 Description — “Stop mice from invading your home, garage, car, truck, or RV with a simple plug-and-play solution. A hassle-free pest-control barrier for any home.”

☁️ Quality & Packaging — The packaging was simple and clean, and the device itself felt high-quality. I was actually surprised how well put together it felt.

📈 Multiple Options — Depending on the size of the space you’re using these for, they had multiple quantities to purchase, and price discounts for ordering more.

📏 Instructions for use — Very easy to follow instructions and usage recommendations. They also go over a lot more of the benefits and research they’ve done on their end. Pretty cool to see it all laid out.

What I love

  • Very effective for mice
  • Safe for kids & pets
  • No smell
  • Affordable solution
  • No chemicals
  • One-time purchase
  • Instant results
  • Prevents nesting
  • New this year

What could be better

  • Often out of stock
  • Not as effective outside

Runner up: Earthkind

2
Earthkind
★★★★☆ 4.3/5
Earthkind Stay Away Rodent Repellent

Overall Rating — These mouse repellent pouches are a decent alternative. However, needing more of them, not being as pet and child friendly as I’d want, and having to replace them every 30 days were minor inconveniences that have me preferring the electronic device. I do think these can see similar results to our top pick, and I may test them more in the future. All-natural ingredients are a huge bonus as well.

❤️ What I love — Easy to use, but these did not seem as effective as RodentRX in terms of results over the time I spent testing them. The overall quality and design are solid. I’d recommend using this as a replacement if out-of-stock issues are causing problems.

🙈 What could be better — Not a ton of advantage going this route in my opinion. Based on the testing and results I mapped, there are other packet/pouch options to help solve your mouse or rat problems.

What I liked

  • Keeps rodents alive
  • Essential oils
  • Can be used outside
  • Easy-to-use pouches
  • Safe for kids if used as directed

What I didn’t

  • Not as effective as I’d hoped
  • Smell wasn’t as nice in my opinion
  • Bulky and heavy — needs a certain storage environment

3
Fresh Cab
★★★★ 4.1/5
Fresh Cab Botanical Rodent Repellent

Overall Rating — Another option if you’re struggling to get pouches to work, or dealing with out-of-stock issues elsewhere. I didn’t have as much luck with this one, but it may work for others. The pouches themselves are nice, but very similar to Earthkind — they seem to be almost the exact same.

❤️ What I love — Clean design and packaging, and the same pouch concept as the others, which I liked. The ingredients are also all natural.

🙈 What could be better — They don’t specifically call out being pet and child friendly, which was a concern for my use case. The design could be altered to be its own product vs. very similar to the others.

What I liked

  • Easy to use
  • Safe if used appropriately
  • Effective packaging material
  • Content created by experts

What I didn’t

  • Effectiveness — not very effective
  • Cheaply made for the quality
  • Bad reviews online
  • A little more expensive

4
Everfield
★★★★ 3.9/5
Everfield Peppermint Oil Pouches

Overall Rating — Quality tablets that may just need to be spread closer together to leave better results. I do think these can see similar results to our top pick, and I may test them more in the future. All-natural ingredients are a huge bonus as well.

❤️ What I love — Similar thoughts as the other pouches, but not as effective in terms of results as RodentRX. The overall quality and design are solid. I’d recommend using this as a replacement if out-of-stock issues are causing problems. Price per unit is also very cheap.

🙈 What could be better — Not a ton of advantage going this route in my opinion. You need to use a lot more of them, and they are messy. Based on the testing and results I mapped, there are other packet/pouch options to help solve your mouse or rat problems.

What I liked

  • High quality and easy to use
  • Keeps mice alive
  • Natural ingredients
  • Well packaged
  • Smell was pleasant

What I didn’t

  • Most expensive cost per pouch
  • Not very effective
  • Similar to other pouches
  • Strange oily feel on the pouches

5
Bye Critter
★★★☆ 3.8/5
Bye Critter Ultrasonic Rodent Repellent

Overall Rating — Another option if you’re struggling to get pouches to work, or dealing with out-of-stock issues. I didn’t have as much luck with this one, but it may work for others. The unit is nice, but you can tell right away it’s made cheaply and the results were minimal. There was also a humming sound that was noticeable when the house was quiet.

❤️ What I love — It’s very easy to use and is supposed to work in similar ways to RodentRX. Not sure why (maybe mine was defective), but this did not seem to work. I hope someday they make one that actually does, because the design caught my eye.

🙈 What could be better — Can be loud and bulky. Whereas RodentRX plugs into an outlet and sits flush on a wall, this device needs batteries and has to sit in the middle of a room for max efficiency, which isn’t convenient. The design could be altered to be its own product vs. very similar to the others.

What I liked

  • Clean design
  • Keeps rodents alive
  • Easy to use

What I didn’t

  • Seems cheaply made
  • Very minimal sign of working
  • I could hear it
  • More expensive
  • Limited placement

Why I Chose ‘RodentRX’

To recap, I was expecting a little better results across the board vs. just a couple of products working. The main area I wanted to focus on was actually solving my mouse and rat problem in the house. After that it was safety for my pets and family, along with the smell. For the reasons above, RodentRX outperformed in ease and repelling vs. the other options above — a lot better. Obviously this is one use case, so do with the information as you please.

I was able to place the devices in the rooms I needed without worrying about my cats or dogs playing with them (like the pouches). The core areas were the kitchen and our master bedroom, and both locations ended up with no new sign when actively keeping these plugged in (they can be plugged in indefinitely). It’s been months since any new sign has appeared and I’ll continue to use RodentRX through the season. As we head into warmer temperatures, I’ll keep testing and update here if anything new is discovered.

I also enjoy seeing what new products come to market, so check back to see if this changes. If you know of a product not tested here that’s worked for you, reach out to let me know.
